Parish clerk Tina Dudley told the A&T: “We are taking procedures to have them removed, through New Forest District Council’s legal team.

“We are not sure how long it will take but we are told the travellers have said they will be leaving tomorrow (Wednesday).

“If they do, then we will get the cleaners in and start setting up.

“If they don’t then it is unlikely the fete will go ahead.”

The fete, which is due to held from midday on Saturday, will feature a steel band, choir, rides, crafts and stalls.

A dog show, children’s fancy dress and raffle are also planned.

The encampment has already resulted in the cancellation of the village youth club, which was due to have met there yesterday (Monday) evening.

A spokesperson for Hampshire police told the A&T: “We are aware of an unauthorised encampment at Lloyds recreational ground in Marchwood that was reported to us just after 9pm on 25th June.

“Officers are continuing to monitor the situation and working closely with the landowners, and local partners, in order to seek a suitable resolution.”
