Attendees are urged to don 1940’s costumes for the Sway event

SWAY residents are invited to join a party on the green with music from the New Forest Big Band to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The event will take place on Stanford Rise Green and Middle Road, or inside the adjacent village hall if wet, at 2.30pm on Saturday 10th May.

Highlights will include a 1940s quiz, hosted by local popular quiz-master Mark Ward, 1940s hits from the New Forest Big Band, and cream teas. There will also be local history displays, classic cars, 40s singing and dancing, and prizes for best dressed attendees.

Event coordinator Simon Hanney said: “Ticket holders will get a ration card which they will exchange at the NAAFI kitchen for their cream tea. After all, rationing was still in place, with the war in Japan continuing.”

Simon added: “The event will raise money for a new kitchen in the village hall and also stage lights for the drama club - both of these are nearly 80 years old themselves and so long overdue renewal!

“Most of all we hope to create a great atmospheric event during which the village can come together to celebrate 80 years since VE day.”

Tickets are £15 for adults and £7.50 for children, with attendees encouraged to don period dress. To book tickets visit www.swaydramaclub.org
