Walkers step up for annual trek in Lizzie’s memory

MORE than 40 families joined a walk from Sandbanks to Milford in memory of 13-year-old Lizzie Murt who died from cancer in 2015.

The annual walk, which marks Lizzie’s birthday, is organised by her mum Helen to raise funds for Southampton General Hospital’s Piam Brown cancer care ward, where Lizzie received care. Every year many of Lizzie’s childhood friends from Milford and Lymington also don their walking shoes to take part.

Helen said: “I love it when Lizzie’s friends come back to join us. They are all growing up so it’s really lovely to do this every year and get together to remember Lizzie.”

Remembered for her outgoing nature, sunny smile and unstoppable determination, Lizzie loved spending time with her family and friends, swimming in the sea and enjoying the coast.

Over the years more than £75,000 has been collected in her memory via an array of initiatives from channel swims to cake sales and mountain climbs. This money has funded new bed spaces on the Piam Brown ward, complete with tables and recliner chairs for parents.

Helen said: “The amazing support from the dedicated staff at the Piam Brown Ward helped our family through such a desperate time. Doing the walk is a lovely way to remember Lizzie, joined by some of my wonderful friends who have continued to walk alongside me on this journey.”
