More than 3,000 sign petition to reinstate Mudeford watersports firm Shoresports after BCP Council brings in new operator
THOUSANDS have got behind a Mudeford watersports company which has hit out at BCP Council for replacing it with a new operator "offering far fewer activities".
Kathryn and Nick May say Shoresports will be left "literally high and dry" with nowhere to operate after another firm was chosen to pick up the contract from April next year.
Mr May said that losing the tender was "a big blow" and he understood the new provider will be offering a "significant reduction" in activities.
An online petition to reinstate Shoresports has gathered more than 3,000 signatures, and a raft of supporters there have left positive comments about Shoresports.
However, BCP Council said it had sought the "best possible service and financial outcomes for local people".
Mr May told the A&T: "I am aware that BCP Council needs to focus on getting the best service for the best price, but they have made a mistake here.
"We offer sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking and raft-building for people of all ages and abilities, and I was looking to offer wing foiling next year as well.
"I understand that the new provider will not be offering sailing or windsurfing – I can’t understand what is happening as these are some of our most popular activities.
"The commodore of Highcliffe Sailing Club has raised serious concerns with the council about the lack of support for sailing in Christchurch harbour if we are not there."
He added: "It may be that they don’t realise what local people and visitors are interested in doing here. Surfing was actually mentioned as part of the tender and that is strange as Christchurch harbour is not a surfing spot at all."
Shoresports had over 6,000 booked sessions this year, Mr May said, in addition to those who turn up on the day.
They also had over 900 taking part in children's clubs and more than 500 youngsters also joined in activities through youth group bookings.
He added: "Our family-run business will literally be left high and dry with nowhere to operate. We have 10 sailing boats which need a base as well as all our other kit and, of course, permission from BCP to operate somewhere."
A spokesperson for BCP Council told the A&T: "The watersports concession at Mudeford Quay was originally awarded to Shoresports for a set term, which ends in March 2023.
"The council has therefore carried out an open tender exercise to select an operator for a new three year term starting in April 2023.
"The tender process aims to ensure the best possible service and financial outcomes for local people.
"We have selected a preferred bidder and are currently undertaking standard due diligence checks prior to issuing a contact."
