Van driver admits causing crash that killed Harley-Davidson biker

A VAN driver will be sentenced later this month by a crown court judge over a fatal crash on the A326 at Marchwood.

Brian Moles (53) appeared at Southampton Crown Court and pleaded guilty to causing the death of Dibden man Paul Matthews by dangerous driving on 8th September last year.

Moles was at the wheel of a Mercedes Sprinter van when it collided with Mr Matthews’ Harley-Davidson bike at the junction with Staplewood Lane just after 10am.

The 56-year-old victim was rushed to hospital but medics were unable to save his life.

Brian Moles, of Lyon Street, Southampton, was granted bail to return to the court for sentence on 21st October.

As reported in the A&T, Mr Matthews’ family shared the grief they were suffering following his death in a heartfelt statement released through police.

“We are truly devastated and numb having been given this news,” they said.

“Paul was a fantastic, loving husband and brother. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and colleagues.”

The statement added: “We would also like to express our sincere thanks to those people who helped Paul at the scene.”
