Vets pedalling to John O'Groats in memory of colleague Rita
TWO women are preparing to cycle the length of the UK in memory of a New Forest veterinary surgeon.
Anna Jennings and Gemma Ives will pedal from Land’s End to John O’Groats in a tribute to their former colleague Rita Mesquita, who they both worked with at Seadown Veterinary Services in Hythe.
The pair had formed a firm friendship with Dr Mesquita, who took her own life last year.
They hope the ride, titled #RideforRita, will raise £5,000 for Vetlife, a charity that supports veterinary surgeons and nurses and their dependants.
It provides a 24/7 phone and email helpline, professional mental health support, financial assistance, information and resources.
So far, they have raised £2,909.
On their fundraising page, Anna and Gemma described Rita as “one of the best vets” they had ever met, saying she had “an infectious laugh” and was “always able to brighten the mood and make the rest of us chuckle too”.
Gemma said: “We are raising money for Vetlife, which I believe provides an invaluable service to the veterinary community, where there is a particularly high prevalence of mental health illness.
“I rang Vetlife several times when I was struggling, and each time they provided a supportive and listening ear – our conversations left me feeling calmer and more settled in myself.”
