Keyhaven beavers and cubs back from the brink and looking for new members and volunteer leaders

A ONCE threatened beavers and cubs pack is set to host a summer fete to recruit new members and volunteers.

Just six months ago Milford and Keyhaven Sea Scout Group faced closure as the cost of maintaining its headquarters and paying bills in Keyhaven spiralled. However, a new team of parents, volunteers and trustees have organised a series of cake sales and fundraisers to cover running costs and maintenance.

Bake sales on the village green in Milford raised £865 and a wreath-making workshop in December a further £300.

Now the group is set to throw open its doors for a summer fete and barbecue in a bid to recruit new helpers and members. Keyhaven Beavers spokesperson Phil Butler said: “We are now in a position where we are almost financially stable but we are now looking to raise money so we can invest in equipment and experiences for the kids.

“We are currently fundraising for a covered outdoor area which we can use for year-round activities.

“At the end of last year we had completely run out of money but thanks to everyone’s hard work we are now back from the brink and looking to build up our Beaver and Cub sections.

“We are also working with Keyhaven Yacht Club for a special joint session that will enable the Beavers and Cubs to get out on the water and experience sailing.”

The Milford and Keyhaven Sea Scouts Summer Fair will take place on Saturday 21st June from noon to 4pm. Highlights will include cream teas, food stalls, a Pimm’s tent, have-a-go family games and a challenge for Beavers and Cubs to cycle the distance to the Scouting HQ in London.

Phil said: “We are hoping the open day will be a chance for potential members to come along as well as anyone living locally who would like to help out.

“Volunteers don’t necessarily have to be parents – we would love to hear from anyone who has skills that they could share whether it’s in sailing or other outdoor activities.”

Keyhaven Beavers is open to children aged six to eight, and meets on Wednesday from 5pm to 6.30pm.
