Walker (78) rescued from mud on ‘treacherous’ stretch of beach, at Chewton Bunny in Barton

A PENSIONER had to be rescued by coastguards and firefighters after becoming stuck in mud on a “treacherous” stretch of beach at Barton.

The alarm was raised around 3.30pm yesterday (Wednesday), with the 78-year-old woman having got into difficulty while walking at Chewton Bunny, below Hoburne Naish holiday park.

At one point she was stuck up to her knees, according to a spokesperson for Lymington Coastguard, which responded with Southbourne counterparts.

Fire crews from New Milton, Redbridge and Dorset assisted in deploying a special mudpath to reach and rescue the casualty in about an hour.

She was then handed over to paramedics at a waiting ambulance for further treatment.

No details of her condition were available, but the Lymington Coastguard spokesperson said she was suffering the effects of the cold.

They warned: “This area is particularly treacherous, and particularly at this time of year.

“Be very aware of the terrain and dangers in the area, and if you get into trouble dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
