FORECASTERS have issued a warning of strong winds as Storm Hannah is set to strike the New Forest and Christchurch for the start of the weekend.

The Met Office predicted the weather would last from about 9pm tomorrow (Friday) until mid-afternoon on Saturday and affect a swathe of south and south-west England, including Hampshire and Dorset, and south Wales.

There could be disruption to travel with inland gusts of 45-55mph likely in more eastern parts on Saturday and up to 70mph on exposed coasts further west.

The lowest-level yellow warning advised of possible delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport. Coastal communities were warned to expect spray and large waves.

High-sided vehicles using exposed routes and bridges might be held up, it added, and there was a risk of short-term power outages due to fallen branches.

Strong winds will push from west to east across parts of south Wales and southwest England late Friday, then across parts of central southern England through Saturday.

The weather warning follows Storm Gareth which hit the UK on 12th and 13th March and brought down trees and disrupted local train and road routes.
