WATCH: Kayaking woman and young girl trapped in mud are winched to safety

A WOMAN and a young girl had to be rescued after their kayak became stuck in mud at Calshot.

Calshot Activities Centre raised the alarm around 3pm on Sunday, reporting the pair had got into difficulty while negotiating Calshot Creek in the inflatable craft.

Specialist mud rescue teams from HM Coastguard Lymington were sent to help the pair, who were stranded about 200 yards off the shore.

Assisted by a Hill Head Coastguard team, they removed both occupants from the kayak, placed them on special mud sleds and winched them to the shore.

The woman, who was in her 40s, and the girl, aged around 10, were then handed over to paramedics for treatment.

A spokesperson for the Lymington rescuers said the woman had suffered a minor laceration injury.

A post on Facebook afterwards by the National Coastwatch Institution – Calshot Tower said: “On Sunday 19th July watch keepers Roy Pullinger and Colin Thompson received a call from Calshot Activities Centre concerning a kayak stuck on the mud with an adult and child on board.

“Having located the casualty they informed HM Coastguard who tasked the Lymington and the Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team.

“Using specialist equipment the casualties were brought to safety and transferred to the South Central Ambulance Service.”
