Yellow Met Office weather alert for rain in New Forest and Christchurch extended for whole weekend
A YELLOW weather alert for more rain covering the New Forest and Christchurch has been extended for the entire weekend.
The Met Office warning comes after heavy downpours caused travel chaos across the regions this week, including marooned motorists having to be rescued from flooded roads in Brockenhurst.
Announced yesterday (Thursday) as running from midnight tomorrow (Saturday) to 6am on Sunday, the alert now runs until 11.59pm Sunday.
The heavy, and at times thundery, showers could bring more flooding and disruption, according to the national weather agency.
It said there is a “small chance” the further downpours could flood and damage homes and businesses, as well as result in loss of power and other services.
There is also a “slight chance” that flooding in some areas could lead to delays or cancellations to train and bus services.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “Many parts of the warning area will see 15-30mm, whilst the wettest spots, most likely close to English Channel coasts, could see 50-70mm.
“In addition, overnight Saturday into early Sunday, strong winds gusting 45-55mph are also probable along exposed parts of the English Channel coastline.”
