New Forest and Christchurch weather: Met Office issues yellow alert for wind warning for Saturday 5th August

It’s going to get a little breezy across the New Forest and Christchurch on Saturday, with a yellow alert issued for the region.

The Met Office has warned wind speeds could reach up to 65mph, disrupting travel and outdoor activities.

As reported, Christchurch music and food festival Stompin on the Quomps has been postponed due to the forecast.

The national weather organisation says travel times will likely be longer, with the chance of cancellations of rail, air and ferry services.

There could be power cuts, flying debris, large waves and beach material thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

The Met Office adds there is a slight chance of damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, as well as to temporary structures and tents.

A spokesperson said: “Unseasonably windy conditions, accompanied by showers or longer spells of rain, will affect parts of England and Wales during Saturday.

“By the afternoon English Channel coasts will see some very windy conditions. Inland gusts of 35-40mph are possible, with a risk of 45-50mph especially across parts of south Wales and south-west England.

“Gusts are expected to reach 50-55mph in coastal areas, perhaps up to 60-65mph in the most exposed coastal areas of Wales and south-west of England.

“Later in the afternoon and through the early evening, wind strengths will begin to slowly ease from the west.”

The alert is in place from 6am to 9pm.
