What to expect over the 10 days of Sway Carnival
THERE will be scarecrow trails, garage sales and carnival processions in Sway when the village’s popular 10-day carnival programme begins on Friday.
A huge highlight in the New Forest village’s calendar, the celebration will feature over 20 activities to get the whole community involved leading up to a procession and party on the Jubilee Fields the following Saturday.
This year’s animation theme takes inspiration from the wacky world of cartoons, with a householders invited to join the fun with a scarecrow and garden decoration trail running for the carnival week duration.
The fun will start on Friday 28th with community talent show at 6pm in the village hall.
On Saturday 29th the popular fete and dog show will return to the Jubilee Field from 11am to 3pm, with a children’s fun run at 11.15am and 11.30pm. Villagers will then have a chance to enjoy live music from Neon Rhythm in the Hare & Hounds pub from 4pm to 6pm.
On Sunday 30th, Sway Drama Club will present a new family friendly musical adventure conceived by village resident Simon Hanney. Mary Poppins in the New Forest will be on stage in the village hall for three performances at 11am, 3pm and 7pm.
Meanwhile Spudworks will host a family fun craft afternoon from 1pm to 3pm, or those looking for a more relaxing afternoon can head to The Manor at Sway from 3pm for Jazz on the Lawn.
On Monday 1st the popular Beetle Drive will be at the village hall from 6.30pm, and on Tuesday 2nd there will be a children’s disco at the village hall at 4.45pm, followed by a quiz night at the Hare & Hounds from 8pm.
Wednesday evening families can join an eco walk around Stanford Rise recreation area from 6.15pm, followed by music a fun bingo session and a barbecue at the Silver Hind from 7pm.
Dancing enthusiasts can join a ceilidh evening at the village hall from 6pm on Thursday; and on Friday a children’s screening of Migration will be showing in the village hall from 5pm; followed by a screening of Ghostbusters at 7pm.
On Saturday 6th July a village garage sale will be taking place at various locations around Sway from 8.30am.
The grand carnival procession will then assemble for judging at Stanford Rise by the village hall at 4.15pm, before setting off through the village towards the Jubilee Field. Later there will be a party with music, food and a bar at the field from 5pm.
A scarecrow trail will be taking place throughout the week based on the animation theme, with maps available from Sway News.
The celebrations will conclude on Sunday 7th with a litter pick of the Jubilee Field at 10am, followed by Boules at Sway Place at 2pm and a grand draw at 4pm.
