New Forest District Council launches postcode checker ahead of wheelie bins rollout

RESIDENTS in the New Forest can check when they will receive wheelie bins as the district council begins its rollout.

As reported in the A&T, the council announced last year a timeline for its depots to receive wheelie bins, as it moves from weekly collections of general waste and recycling in sacks.

It has now launched a postcode checker so residents can find out which phase they are in and when the new collections start.

As part of the rollout, residents will be provided with two wheelie bins: a black lidded 180-litre bin for general waste, and a green lidded 240-litre one for recyclable items, which includes paper, card, plastic and metal. Both will be collected fortnightly on alternate weeks.

The council will also issue each home with a brown outdoor caddy and a smaller grey indoor caddy, plus an initial supply of caddy liners, for the new food waste recycling service, which will be collected weekly.

Phase one of the new scheme, to be rolled out in June, will see residents in New Milton, Lymington, and surrounding areas, become among the first to receive their bins.

Phase two, which covers the west and north-west of the Forest and includes Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Burley, and surrounding areas, will start in October.

Residents in phase three, the east and north-east of the Forest, including Totton, Hythe, and Marchwood, will not receive theirs until March 2026.

An NFDC spokesperson said: “The new waste collection service is all part of the council’s work to make it easier for residents to recycle more and throw less away, and weekly food waste collections are a key part of this improvement.

“Residents will be able to recycle a wide range of food waste, including vegetable peelings, meat, fish and dairy products – including bones – tea bags, coffee grounds, and plate scrapings. Once collected, food waste is taken to an anaerobic digestion facility where it will create renewable energy and fertiliser.”

Glass collections will remain monthly, while the payable garden waste service moved from reusable bags to wheelie bins last April.

Examples of the bins and caddies are available to view at NFDC’s information offices in Lymington, Lyndhurst New Milton and Ringwood.
