Woman airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after collision with car

A WOMAN in her 80s was airlifted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a collision with a car as she crossed a road in Milford.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance was called to the incident that took place at the junction of Sea Road and Keyhaven Road just before 10am today (Wednesday).

Several police cars cordoned off the scene and an ambulance and helicopter crew tended to the casualty who was lying in the middle of the road.

Witnesses who ran over to help described hearing a bang and seeing a woman, who had been using a walking frame, underneath a car.

Emergency services were called at 9.52am and arrived within 15 minutes of the incident.

A spokesperson from the South Central Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a female in her 80s who had been hit by a car.

“We had an ambulance crew, a rapid response vehicle and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance on scene assessing and treating the patient.

“Following treatment by all our crews at the scene she was taken to University Hospital Southampton by air.”

Ex-Met Police officer Garry Staincliffe was the first on the scene. He told the A&T: “The driver of the Mercedes was coming out of Sea Road turning right into Keyhaven Road.”

He described the driver as being in a “state of panic” and looking shaken up.

Mr Staincliffe added that he had seen five incidents at the same turning outside the Smugglers pub in the past year.

A Milford resident near the scene said: “It is a bad corner, it’s narrow and people coming from Keyhaven Road are usually over the middle as there is no white line.

“If you see a car coming the other way you move over but there are often pedestrians crossing the road at the junction.

“There are also delivery vehicles which park on the side of the road outside the Co-op which makes it harder to see.”
