Youngsters enjoy the snow as New Forest and Christchurch escape severe disruption
WHILE the area was largely unaffected by snow last week, Bournemouth Airport saw delays to flights.
Flurries started last Thursday, and the Met Office issued an amber warning for London and South East England which was then downgraded to a yellow warning for snow and ice on the Friday morning.
The biggest disruption was to the airport, where all flights were put on hold on Friday morning due to snow on the airfield. It was cleared at 10am that same day.
Despite mass school closures across Dorset and Hampshire, locally all remained open.
The adverse weather prompted deployment of more than 25 gritters throughout Hampshire to prepare the roads for the forecast snowfall.
Major highways in the area were left clear after the widespread operation but road users were still encouraged to drive with caution after the Met Office warned of ‘treacherous driving conditions’ in some southern areas.
Many revellers made the most of the snow, wrapping up and braving the cold, and it was fun and games for children who took to early morning sledding at Bolton’s Bench in Lyndhurst.
