New Milton Paralympic gold medallists Alice Tai and Mikey Jones produced stellar performances at the British Para-swimming International Meet in Glasgow last week.

Alice won three gold medals, the 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly. The 20-year-old former Bournemouth Collegiate School student also set a new S8 world record in the 50-metre freestyle twice in the event and lowered her own 100-metre S8 backstroke world record.

Twenty-four-year old Mikey, an S7 category athlete, won gold in the 400m freestyle multi-classification race, beating competitors ranging from S5-S13.

Mikey, a former Ballard School pupil, was over joyed with his performances, he told the A&T: “Firstly, I am really happy with my swims. It is the fastest time I have ever swum in a morning session and to do two swims back to back in the heats and then the final with those times is impressive.”

As a result of their top times the New Milton duo have both been selected to represent Great Britain at the forthcoming Para-swimming World Championships in London in September (9-15).

Mikey added: “I am very happy to make the GB team and to be able to swim at a home World Championships will be amazing.

“I am really looking forward to that, it will be a great occasion with lots of British support and a great atmosphere at what is a special facility at the Aquatics Centre in London.”
