Letter: Blowing smoke in the face of our woke, snowflake society
SIR – Watching a new drama serial, The Consultant, streamed on Amazon, I noted the now-customary line of cautionary warnings appear before the opening credits.
There they were the usual terrible culprits: nudity, swearing, violence, smoking...
Smoking?! Is our woke, snowflake society now so delicate that the sight of an actor puffing away on-screen is going to be traumatic or corrupting?
If so, what's next?
Among trigger-hazards to come, how about: not wearing a seat belt, walking near a cliff edge, crossing a busy road, over-eating?
What we used to call nanny state health-and-safety culture has been embraced and amplified by the entertainment industry.
Cowed by fear of litigation, it treats us like hypersensitive infants.
The Consultant is proving to be an excellent thriller. Strangely, I have not felt the urge to buy a packet of cigarettes.
