Letter: New Forest MP Julian Lewis is right to be concerned about Waterside railway
SIR – MP Julian Lewis is right to call for a reality check on the proposed Waterside railway.
Unless it can run all the way to Calshot (and there is no hope of that happening), this plan is dead in the water and no further money should be wasted on it.
No one is going to get in their car at Calshot or Fawley just to drive to Hythe, and then pay to park (at cost, in a car park that doesn’t exist).
If they are going to get in their car at all then realistically, being halfway there, they will just continue to drive into Southampton – not to mention it would completely kill off the ferry.
The notion of bringing back the railway is nothing more than the developers trying to look good.
It has no chance of ever happening whilst the refinery exists and people should stop living in cloud cuckoo land thinking otherwise.
