Letter: Ministers left pensioners in New Forest to suffer a shivering existence
I wonder, if those ministers luxuriating in their warm offices and second homes bothered to consider the current regulations for care homes, factories and shops when they removed the winter fuel allowance from most pensioners.
This suggests not: "The minimum temperature for a care home in the UK is 21C (70F) for residents' rooms and communal areas, and 16C (61F) for corridors and staircases.
Explanation: cold temperatures can increase the risk of illness and death for older people. The aging process makes it harder for the body to regulate temperature and detect cold. Some conditions, such as heart attacks, strokes, breathing problems, flu, depression, and falls, can be caused by cold temperatures."
For factories and shops: “During working hours the temperature in all indoor workplaces must be reasonable. There’s no law for minimum or maximum working temperatures, for example when it’s too cold or too hot to work. However, guidance suggests a minimum of 16C or 13C if employees are doing physical work.”
Pensioners who lost their allowance, would love to indulge their homes in such tropical heat.
Unfortunately, we have to suffer a shivering existence instead!
Such a caring government.
