Letter: Pavement cycling on New Forest would be dangerous
Regarding Dr Tom McEwen’s letter published on 19th January, while I appreciate that some roads are dangerous for cyclists, I disagree with his suggestion that cyclists should be allowed to use the pavements. This would be dangerous for pedestrians.
Even with the current by-laws, all too often cyclists on the pavements expect pedestrians to get out of their way – this also happens on the coast path, even though there are signs reminding cyclists that it is a permissive path only for them. They also churn up footpaths making them muddy and slippery for pedestrians.
There are many vulnerable people using the pavements and coastal path: people with prams, pushchairs and young children, people who don’t move very easily, especially those using walking sticks, walking frames and mobility scooters and those who don’t hear or see very well.
The Netherlands has had a successful policy for over 50 years of encouraging people to walk or cycle by providing an excellent network of separate cycle and pedestrian routes. New housing estates have separate cycle and pedestrian routes which are the most direct routes to the shops, station, etc.
I would suggest that a policy on these lines would be the best way to protect both cyclists and pedestrians. Let’s not put vulnerable pedestrians at risk by allowing cyclists to use the pavements.
