Letter: Road patching works on New Forest a hole lot of nothing

I want to protest about the state of our roads and the measures being taken to effect so-called repairs.

As a result of chronic underfunding over the years, we have arrived at the current situation.

I think the problem is now so bad that a new approach is required. The council should not rely on the public to notify them about pot holes, but Instead, they send out a van and systematically properly fix as many potholes as they can rather than fix one hole and leave another 200 yards or so down the road.

It is the council's policy to effect temporary repairs. This is a complete waste of money and time. A dollop of tarmac is put into the hole, barely tapped down and the edges not sealed properly, so a couple of months later the pot hole is back. I have personally witnessed this in a number of locations.

It makes economical sense to just make one visit and do the job properly. Road safety is being impaired and driving resembles a slalom course while trying to avoid potholes and other cars. Not to mention the rise in car insurance due to damage to vehicles wheels and suspension, etc.

I thought the council had a statuary duty to maintain the roads. What a travesty of legal guidelines.
