Letter: Barton roof scammers ripped off my tile

SIR – Recently two works-uniformed men cold-called at my home in Sea Road, Barton, and said they had noticed my roof ridge tiles were looking unstable.

I said I did not deal with cold-callers. "No problem," they replied, "we are quite willing to go up and access the damage, under no obligation."

I allowed one to go up and as the other distracted me by chatting, the first one prised a whole ridge tile off and held it aloft.

They quoted an exorbitant sum to cover repairs. I realised they were scamming me, so cut things short by saying I would need this in writing to discuss with my family.

They promptly left in their unmarked white van.

My sincere thanks to local roofer Mike Rickman who responded immediately to my subsequent call.

He was rightly disgusted at my experience, checked the roof, and re-bedded the tile they had removed. Excellent prompt, professional and caring service.
