Letter: Thank you to our village litter-picking gentleman

SIR – I’d like to highlight an elderly gentleman who on a daily basis, be it morning or afternoon, is out litter-picking on very narrow verges by the golf course on the Milford road.

Bless this man and, when speaking to him, his modest ways and approach to what is a continuous kind act of caring about where he lives.

He is out picking up what people decide to ignorantly toss from their cars when passing through – a disgusting sight to see anywhere, let alone a beautiful area like this.

He has inspired me recently to clean the beachfront at Milford. I go there every day for a coffee and swim.

I’ve seen nothing but families setting up new bases with towels, chairs and brollies, with most too ignorant to clear up around them – just sitting on discarded trash of all varieties.

The worst I have picked up have been a sanitary towel, used tissues, sweet wrappers, and wooden forks from chips or ice cream.

There’s no excuse for any of this as there’s a massive sign in the car park, with bags provided, to clean up after yourselves. Better still, there are many bins to also use.

It's pure lazy, bone idle behaviour.

Thank God for this man who has inspired me, and hopefully others that see him.

I feel he needs to be acknowledged in a massive way of thanks and total appreciation, which I’m sure he doesn’t encourage.

I hope he’s mentioned in a column. I look forward to maybe a reporter seeking him out for a picture and story to be told.

Liam Hinks,
Barton
