Letter: What is the government doing about soaring energy prices?

SIR – As a pensioner I now need to find an affordable gas and electricity provider. Sadly, the usual online comparison candidates are offering eye watering contracts at 40% of a single government pension payment.

The provider websites are not much better – even if a long term (two to three years) fixed tariff is taken, there will be a dramatic 25% increase as a percentage of my pension.

The increase is in part due to incompetent supply management by the utility provider, in that they chose bonuses over investment in storage facilities, the Ofgem agreement on price capping, and finally the geopolitical environment where gas is being weaponised.

Energy bills have risen dramatically in the past few months
Energy bills have risen dramatically in the past few months

So it would be helpful if the government and our local MP could explain what they intend to do about securing cheaper gas for the country and assisting the pensioners who, thanks to this government, will receive a very small pension increase.

Perhaps the time has come to find a government that focuses on these strategic issues and a little less on socialising in grace and favour homes.
