Letter: You can't see Lymington's weeds behind the wheel of a Porsche
SIR – This year the streets of Lymington were invaded by a weed called fleabane. It is a tough and persistent weed and the council has no money to remove it. Last year the big invasive weed on our highways and pavements was sowthistle.
Another invasive species on local highways is the Porsche. Many Porsches can be seen cruising into and around Lymington nowadays, with other extravagant motor cars.
Perhaps it is difficult to see the weeds from behind the wheel of a Porsche, but I can see them clearly from a 15-year-old Vauxhall.
The private wealth of the wealthy increases year by year and the Government wants to accelerate this. Yet in one of Britain’s wealthiest small towns there is no money to weed the streets! I ask you!
Much more critically, the NHS is running on empty. Permanently!
My friend, a retired postman in Southampton, last year borrowed £8,000 to have his prostate operation ‘on the private’. The NHS could not do it any time soon and he was in agony.
And I can’t get NHS dentistry in Lymington!
To my mind indicators like these add up to a scandalous situation in a wealthy country. There now seems a good chance of a change of government nationally. Electors of the New Forest, I urge you to cause a local political earthquake at the earliest opportunity and vote for public good before private profit.
Jon Ellis,
Lymington
