Remembrance Sunday: Where communities are honouring the fallen
WAR veterans, youth organisations and civic leaders will parade through towns and villages across the New Forest and Christchurch on Sunday before taking part in services of remembrance.
New Milton
On Sunday, wreath bearers and community organisations will parade from Crossmead Avenue car park at 10.45am to gather around the war memorial on the recreation ground before 11am. The parade will be led by Goff Beck.
The Last Post will be played and the exhortation read before a two-minute silence is ob-served. Groups taking part in the wreath-laying ceremony will include local school children, war veterans, members of youth organisations, the emergency services, various clubs and societies and other civic dignitaries.
Following the silence, the parade will move along Old Milton and Station roads where New Milton mayor Cllr Alan Reid will take the salute outside Barclays bank before it continues to the Memorial Centre where a remembrance service will be held.
During the service pupils from Arnewood School will give a presentation marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day and students from Durlston Court School will present ‘1944 – the Global Picture’. The service will be led by the Rev Andrew Bailey.
On Monday members of New Milton Royal British Legion will take part in a small wreath-laying ceremony at the town’s war memorial at 11am.
Barton
A service of Remembrance will be held at the Indian Memorial in Barton at 3pm.
New Milton deputy mayor Cllr Keith Craze will lay a wreath along with other local groups and individuals. The public are welcome to attend.
Lymington
On Sunday veterans, youth organisations, military groups and civic leaders and will gather at 9am at the town hall on Avenue Road and march from the car park at 9.25am.
The parade, which will include Lymington mayor Cllr Anne Corbridge and other town councillors, will then travel along Southampton Road and St Thomas Street before participants arrive at St Thomas’ Church at around 9.45am.
A remembrance service will begin at 10am when the names of the 160 fallen servicemen will be read out.
Afterwards the congregation will leave the church to gather at the cenotaph, where a representative from the Royal British Legion will read the exhortation. Following a two-minute silence at 11am and wreath-laying ceremony, the parade will return along New Street and Avenue Road.
Christchurch
On Sunday the traditional remembrance service will begin at Purewell Cross War Memorial at 9.15am on Sunday. Members of the town council will be attending the procession and the mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Lesley Dedman, will lay a wreath.
The civic party, including the chairman of BCP Council Cllr David Flagg, will then join the Royal British Legion parade outside of the Old Town Hall and process through the High Street to the Priory Church, where a service will begin at 10.50am. All events are open to the public.
Highcliffe
A service of remembrance will be held at St Mark’s Church at 10am followed by wreath-laying at 11am. The chairman of Highcliffe Parish Council will be laying a wreath, with a number of councillors present.
Milford, Keyhaven and Everton
On Sunday, a service will take place at All Saints’ Church at 3pm preceded by a parade of young people from the village green.
At 2pm, at Keyhaven memorial, there will be a short service of remembrance attended by representatives from New Forest District Council, Hampshire County Council, youth organisations and military groups.
At Everton there will be wreath-laying during the morning service at St Mary’s Church in Everton beginning at 10.50am.
Lyndhurst
A service will be held at St Michael and All Angels’ Church at 10.45am on Sunday before the parade forms up at midday to march down the high street to the war memorial by Bolton’s Bench.
The ceremony is expected to last until 12.30pm and, weather-permitting, will feature a flypast at about 12.17pm by an RAF Chinook helicopter.
The military will be represented by the Marchwood-based 17 Port and Maritime Regiment and the Royal Signals from Bulford, near Salisbury. Hampshire’s Deputy Lieutenant Oliver Crosthwaite-Eyre will be among those laying wreaths, as well as New Forest District Council chair Cllr Allan Glass and parish council chair Cllr Chris Willsher.
Ringwood
On Sunday the civic service will take place in the parish church in Ringwood Market Square starting at 10.50am. It will be attended by members of Ringwood Town Council, local organisations and serving members of the armed forces.
After the service there will be a procession through Ringwood to the war memorial where wreaths will be laid.
On Monday there will be a short service at the war memorial at 10.45am and a maroon will be sounded at 11am to signify the start of the national two-minute silence.
Totton and Netley Marsh
The parade will leave Beaumont Road at 10am and make its way to the war memorial car park, off Salisbury Road, where a service will be held at 10.35am. At 11.20am, the parade will reform and march back to Beaumont Road.
The event will be attended by RBL branch members, veterans, local councillors and rep-representatives from Marchwood Army Camp, the Army Cadets, the Air Training Corps, and local Scouts and Guides.
In Netley Marsh, a service will take place at St Matthew’s Church at 10.30am before the two-minute silence is observed at 11am at the cenotaph on Ringwood Road.
Brockenhurst
A remembrance service will take place at St Saviour’s Church on Wilverley Road at 9.45am on Sunday, with attendees asked to be in their seats 10 minutes before the start.
At the end of the service veterans, parish councillors and youth groups will parade to the war memorial in Sway Road in time to arrive shortly before 11am. A wreath-laying service will then take place.
Copythorne
A parade will assemble at Copythorne Parish Hall at 9.15am ready to move off at 9.30am in the direction of St Mary’s Church. Led by the Royal British Legion standard bearers, the parade will include Totton Army Cadets, members of the Stanley’s Own Scout Group, the Scout centenary band and the Guide band.
The service at St Mary’s Church will be led by the Rev John Reeve, the chaplain of the Royal British Legion. Due to the large number of attendees expected at the service there will also be a satellite broadcast in the adjoining Scout hut.
Burley
On Sunday the roads into the village will be closed at 10.45am for the service at The Cross war memorial.
Wreaths will then be laid by local groups including the Scouts, Cubs, Brownies, Red Cross, the fire service and the young people of Burley. Also in attendance will be the Ringwood and Burley Band.
After the wreath-laying ceremony the groups will parade to St John’s Church for a further service.
Hordle
A remembrance service at All Saints Church at 9.30am. After the service, parish councillors, youth organisations and war veterans will assemble in Woodcock Lane at around 10.30am, to parade up towards the war memorial on Everton Road.
A short service and wreath laying ceremony will begin at around 10.45am and conclude just after the two-minute silence at 11am.
