Rugby couple convert world cup defeat into wedded bliss
BITTER defeat turned to sweet romance for one New Milton rugby fan when his marriage proposal during the world cup final was accepted – by his South African girlfriend.
Despite the disappointment of England losing the match in Japan, the day was full of happy memories for Dan Mallard and Michelle Jackson when she said yes to his surprise offer of marriage.
Dan waited until halftime before pulling out a ring and going on one knee in front of 100 people at New Milton Rugby Club where the game was being screened over beers and breakfast.
England went on to lose the game 32-12 to South Africa, so there was double delight for Michelle whose team triumphantly lifted the Webb Ellis Cup at the International Stadium Yokohama.
When she accepted Dan’s proposal the clubhouse burst into happy applause – giving at least one group of England fans something to cheer about.
A&T sports editor Ryan Davies witnessed the scenes at New Milton Rugby Club and said: “After a tense first half, this definitely lightened the mood.
“It caught everyone by surprise but the place erupted after she said yes. I’m not sure I’ll watch many world cup finals where the game gets upstaged quite like this.”
