Poppy Cleall scores two as England women claim Six Nations Grand Slam
BURGATE’S Poppy Cleall scored twice for England Women as they won their final match to clinch the 2019 Women's Six Nations Grand Slam.
The Red Roses secured the title with an 80-0 bonus-point win over Scotland at Twickenham Stadium.
Having already won their first four games with bonus points, England ran in 12 tries in front of a record crowd to regain the title France won last year.
It took just over two minutes for them to score when former-Ellingham & Ringwood player Poppy broke the line before unselfishly slipping the ball to Sarah Beckett to score under the sticks.
Two more tries came in quick succession before 26-year-old Poppy drove over for a try of her own after some impressive forward work kept Scotland defending their line for what seemed like an eternity.
Another try meant the sides went in at half-time with the scores at 45-0.
After the break the Red Roses forwards really started to drive home their advantage with tries for Sarah Bern and captain Sarah Hunter.
Poppy then added a second to her account to fully justify her recall to the starting line-up when she picked the ball up off the back of a ruck before driving over.
Tries from Emily Scarratt and Cath O'Donnell sealed the deal for the Red Roses.
After the win, Red Roses head coach Simon Middleton said: “I’m absolutely thrilled with the outcome. Our goal was to win the Six Nations and we’ve done that and done it in great style.
“Our extended aim was to put in an improved performance and grow as a squad both on and off the field and I think that we’ve done that.
“For me it’s not about the result but about the way that we did it.”
In the Six Nations campaign Poppy scored four tries in three appearances and twin sister Bryony scored twice on her debut, the duo making history as the first twins to win a Women’s Six Nations Grand Slam.
England have won the women's Six Nations 15 times, 14 of them as Grand Slams.
