AFC Totton knocked out on penalties in FA Trophy third round tie at Biggleswade as Charlie Austin’s decisive spot-kick is saved
FORMER Premier League striker Charlie Austin missed the decisive penalty as AFC Totton went out of the FA Trophy on Tuesday night.
The Stags made a 240-mile midweek round trip to Biggleswade for the third-round clash after Storm Darragh led to the postponement of Saturday’s scheduled meeting.
The tie went the distance following a 1-1 draw, with ex-Southampton man Austin seeing the final spot-kick saved as Biggleswade won the shoot-out 3-2.
Totton fell behind in the 16th minute when a free-kick from the right was headed in by Josh Steele.
The visitors were struggling to create much, with Biggleswade - buoyed by the goal - on top both in possession and territory.
They improved at the start of the second half, with three efforts on goal from substitute Ethan Taylor in the opening minutes.
Austin went close with a header from Tom Blair’s corner midway through the half before pressure was rewarded with a 75th-minute equaliser.
Taylor got away down the left and crossed for Tony Lee, who finished at the back post.
Totton were looking the more likely winners in the closing stages and with nine minutes added on, there was still time, but Biggleswade held on.
Max Evans saved twice in the shoot-out to keep Totton in contention but his efforts proved in vain.
Taylor and Sam Magri converted for the visitors, with Lee and Blair unsuccessful before Austin’s spot-kick low to the keeper’s right was kept out.

Hills had his second goal seven minutes later, firing into the top corner from the edge of the box. And it was 3-0 in the 21st minute when Aidan Partridge put through his own goal in his attempts to cut out George Barker’s cross from the left.
Moneyfields completed the scoring five minutes from time with Jafer Mahammedkier firing home after Joy Nzambi won a header.

Brockenhurst were edged 1-0 at Hamble in the Wessex League Premier Division on Tuesday night.
Swiftly rearranged after the weekend postponement, the only goal was scored by Chase Michel on the hour mark.
A lively start saw Hamble hit the bar before the Badgers struck the woodwork twice in the space of a minute. The visitors went on to miss a golden chance from two yards and were looking the better side.
Man-of-the-match Michel secured the points for Hamble after cutting inside from the right and thumping home.
Clayd Roach had a goal ruled out for a foul as Hamble missed out on a late second.
