Match report: Blackfield & Langley FC move three points clear of Wessex League Premier Division relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Cowes Sports FC

Blackfield & Langley moved three points clear of the relegation zone after a nervy match against Cowes Sports in a contest settled by a single goal on Saturday.

The third-from-bottom Watersiders have been in much better form lately under the guidance of new manager Nathan Brown, who oversaw a hard-fought win over 11th-placed Cowes Sports.

“It’s another step in the right direction”, said Blackfield & Langley manager Nathan Brown after the game. “The lads worked really hard and got the three points needed, but the job to stay up has only just started, so we have to keep working hard and picking up points.

“It’s a long way to go to the end of the season. We need to keep doing what we can and hope everything else goes our way.”

Blackfield made a decent start, with powerful striker Joe Roberts almost breaking a five-minute-old deadlock, but his decent strike flew straight at Ed Hatt in the Cowes’ net.

As the half progressed, the hosts restricted the visitors, who were left with no option but to try and pepper the goal with hopeful long-range efforts that Dan Blackburn dealt with superbly.

On the stroke of half-time, Cowes should have been down to 10 men after a shocking studs-up challenge, but the referee was unmoved until booking Roberts for expressing his views on the challenge.

Dylan Roocroft was giving the Cowes defenders a torrid time, creating and working space constantly. In one particular moment, the player beat three men before seeing his effort deflected wide before Roberts saw an effort cleared off the line.

Finally, with 72 minutes played, Roocroft got the goal his play deserved, firing a low finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

The finish got a little nervy towards the end, but the hosts held on to seal a crucial victory in their fight for league survival.
