Match report: Blackfield & Langley escape Wessex League Premier Division relegation zone after 1-0 victory over Baffins Milton Rovers

Blackfield & Langley secured a vital victory in their fight for league survival, taking all three points after a narrow 1-0 win over Baffins Milton Rovers to escape the relegation zone on Saturday.

The match was the first under the new Blackfield & Langley manager, Nathan Brown, who became the club’s third manager of the season.

The former Christchurch boss, who joins from Poole Borough FC, has replaced Jayda Chiutare, who had lost his last six Wessex League Premier Division games.

Joe Merrett almost opened the scoring for Blackfield & Langley within three minutes, but his effort flew wide before keeper James Harwood produced an excellent save to deny the Baffins’ striker.

Harwood made a few decent stops before Keegan Kelly stunned the pre-match favourites with a left-footed long-range effort that hit the post and flew in, leaving the helpless keeper incredulous with 32 minutes played.

Kelvin Robinson rattled the Watersiders’ woodwork just before the break, but the half-time whistle arrived with the visitors still leading.

Both sides went close after the break, with Baffins’ wayward finishing their downfall and superb shot-stopping from Roux Hardcastle being Blackfield’s.

Charlie Hitchings thought he had doubled Blackfield’s advantage with 12 minutes left, but his long-range effort that had the keeper beaten narrowly missed the target wide.

There was still time for Baffins to hit the frame of the goal again, but when the follow-up effort went into orbit, the final whistle came, lifting the Watersiders out of the relegation zone.

Blackfield & Langley have a short break before playing away from home next Tuesday against third-placed AFC Stoneham at 7.45pm
