Match report: Christchurch FC won their last Wessex League Premier Division away match of the season 4-2 against Cowes Sports FC

Christchurch were comfortable with a three-goal lead, but they made it nervy for themselves by letting Cowes Sports narrow the scores to 3-2 before an injury-time fourth settled the match on Saturday.

Luke Sheehy gave the hosts the lead after nine minutes before Addwell Chipangura and Joe Freak made it 3-0, but a double from Cowes set up a nervy finale before Chipangura put the nail in the coffin late on.

Both teams started well while looking to play attractive football, with Cowes getting into the visitors box twice without reward.

With eight minutes left, Christchurch won a free-kick on the left side of the box. The ball was delivered without much pace, but it made its way through a maze of players to find Sheehy, unmarked at the back post, who had the simple task of tapping the ball home.

The second goal arrived just after the 20th minute when quick play saw Chipangura released after a delightful one-two. He bore down on goal and touched it past Ed Hatt and into the net.

Cowes came back well and hit the woodwork twice, but Christchurch scored a third goal. After good work in midfield, an excellent pass was made, and Freak was through on goal. He held his nerve, slotting beyond the oncoming keeper.

After the break, Cowes came out much more aggressively, not allowing Christchurch time on the ball, and it soon paid off.

With 57 minutes played, Cowes scrambled the ball across the line at a corner after multiple efforts and an excellent parry from keeper Ben Rodwell, with Scott McFarlane tapping in at the back post.

With eight minutes left, Ryan Oatley delivered a superb ball behind the defence. The quality led to a mistake, with a back-tracking defender getting a touch and sending it beyond the keeper.

With Cowes chasing the draw and five minutes added time signalled, Christchurch scored against the run of play after a ball over the top saw Chipangura beat the offside trap before knocking it over Hatt to make it 4-2 and seal the win.

Christchurch plays their final game of the season when they host Portland United on Saturday at 3pm.
