Match report: Christchurch FC beat Portland United FC 4-1 in final Wessex League Premier Division match of the season
Christchurch played their final match of the season at home, delighting the Hurn Bridge crowd with a dominant 4-1 display against Portland United on Saturday.
Addwell Chipangura opened the scoring, but after the break, the match came to life thanks to goals from Jake Dove, Jamie Webber, and Joe Freak.
Church limited Portland to sporadic chances, but their best chance came after 17 minutes. Freddie Beale burst down the left and delivered the ball into the danger area, resulting in multiple efforts, but the Christchurch defence hooked the ball clear.
Minutes later, Chipangura raced through on goal after being slipped through. After winning the foot race, the speedy attacker knocked the ball past Lucas Goad to make it 1-0.
With eight minutes of the half left, the referee awarded a penalty to Christchurch. Up-stepped the hosts top-scorer, Freak, who has an excellent record from 12 yards. However, Goad judged well and dived to his left to make a great save.
After the break, Christchurch finally grabbed their deserved second goal. Dove picked up the ball on the edge of the area and delivered a sublime strike,
The Hurn Bridge crowd reserved their biggest cheer of the afternoon for the third goal when former Bashley player Webber smashed the ball to the keeper’s left after latching onto a ball across the 18-yard box.
The visitors pulled one back in the 83rd minute thanks to Josh Camp, who headed home at the back post.
However, the hosts refused to let Portland have the final say, with Freak scoring from close range after turning his man in the box and smashing into the roof of the net. The goal saw Freak finish as the second-highest goal scorer in the division, with 25 strikes.
