Forecast of strong wind blows back town's annual sports fun day
FORECASTS of strong winds have forced New Milton Rugby Club to postpone its family fun day to the end of the month.
The annual event, featuring a free sports fair, had been due to take place at the club’s Ashley Recreation Ground base from 11am to 5pm tomorrow (Saturday).
However, with organisers saying wind speeds were forecast to reach around 50mph in the New Milton area, the decision was made not to go ahead over health and safety concerns.
The announcement was made on the New Milton Rugby Club Family Fun Day Facebook page by Matt Wale yesterday (Thursday) evening.
“Due to high winds we are postponing our event this weekend and looking at Saturday 29th June,” he wrote.
“If you could join us for this date that would be amazing. Thanks again for your support and apologies for postponing the event – we have not taken the decision lightly with safety in mind.”
The fun day has been a fixture at the rugby club for over a decade, with its aim to encourage children to get involved in the sport as well as many others.
This year youngsters were invited to try their hand at 12 different sporting activities from across the New Forest, including Y-Ball, tennis, golf, football, fitness, taekwondo, table tennis and street dance.
As well as the children’s fair, the event is set to feature a variety of attractions for all ages including a car boot sale, funfair stalls, a five-a-side football competition, a dog show, arena displays, and a DJ and live music.
