East Cowes Victoria 2 New Milton Town 4: Manager Matt Maybury enjoys big win at title rivals in Wessex League Division One
NEW Milton Town manager Matt Maybury insisted his team haven’t won anything yet – despite a key dramatic victory on Saturday.
The 10-man Brickmakers scored two stoppage-time goals to hand the Wessex League Division One leaders a 4-2 victory at East Cowes Victoria.
It means New Milton sit six points clear but are now 15 points ahead of East Cowes, who have four games in hand, in fourth spot.
With their destiny in their own hands, Maybury said: “It felt like a big win; everything seemed to be against us, and when we went down to 10, the lads somehow found a second wind. It speaks volumes about the character of this team.
“The scenes when the third and fourth goals went in tell you everything about this group and their togetherness. They couldn’t have worked any harder, and I probably think other sides would have downed tools after some of the decisions that went against us.
“Like I said to the boys afterwards, yes, it’s a big win, but we’ve achieved nothing yet. We’ve got 10 games to go, and the Romsey game next week is just as important.
“It was amazing to see so much support over there and how much it means to people. I’m delighted we could get the three points for you and make it a good trip home!”
New Milton went ahead on 26 minutes when Elliott Pearce-Eavis converted but two goals in four minutes before half-time turned the game around.
Zak Sullivan converted a penalty on 41 minutes when Josh Neale was fouled by Jack Kinge-Phillips.
Then, on the stroke of half-time, pressure from the home side was rewarded with a deflected goal from Elliot Wheeler.
It was 2-2 when a Pearce-Eavis cross was turned into his own net by East Cowes’ Sullivan.
Billy Maybury, who had already been sin-binned, then collected a second yellow card to leave the visitors with 10 men for the final six minutes.
But instead of holding on for a point, there was a dramatic late twist in the plot.
In the first minute of stoppage time, Pearce-Eavis converted his second from a free-kick at the far post to put the Brickmakers ahead.
Then Brad Snelling wrapped up the points as he raced through three minutes later before finishing past the keeper to the delight of an excellent travelling support.
It’s now 22 league games without defeat for New Milton, who visit mid-table Romsey Town this Saturday.
