Christchurch-based Arnewood Divers has launched a Sport England-backed fundraising campaign to build a new accessible boat
Christchurch-based Arnewood Divers has launched a fundraising campaign to build a new accessible boat to support new and experienced divers, including those with disabilities.
The local scuba diving club has launched a campaign to replace its current boat, which has been in service for over 30 years and is now beyond repair.
The club aims to raise £15,000 to build a new, purpose-built dive vessel that will be safer, more accessible, and better equipped to support both new and experienced divers, including those with disabilities.
To support the campaign, Arnewood Divers has teamed up with Sport England, which has pledged to match public donations up to £7,500 — meaning every pound donated has double the impact.
Wendy Holt, the diving officer who has been part of the club for 35 years, says the new boat will help the club continue its mission of making diving more accessible and bringing people together through a shared love for the ocean.
“The most important thing is keeping that door open — especially for people who might think diving is out of their reach,” Holt said. “We want everyone to know that exploring and protecting the ocean isn’t just for a select few. It’s for anyone with the curiosity and courage to give it a go.”
The club currently has over 20 active members, spanning all ages and walks of life. It’s always looking to welcome new people, regardless of their experience level.
“It’s a non-competitive sport, so it’s a fantastic way to meet people and stay active at any age,” said Holt. “But diving equipment is heavy, and that’s why we need a safer, more accessible boat that works for everyone.”
The new boat will feature a custom-designed dive platform to make entries and exits safer and easier, with added features for divers with mobility needs.
Holt added: “Arnewood Divers offers a supportive, community-focused environment where members gain high-level diving training and essential life skills — from first aid and rescue techniques to people management and leadership.
“We build a sense of community with strong relationships through shared experiences, mentoring, and a structured training system.”
