Midweek football: Bashley, Lymington, AFC Totton, Brockenhurst and Ringwood in action

IT was a mixed bag of results for local sides in the latest round of midweek fixtures, with Bashley's eight-goal demolition of Lymington Town in the Russell Cotes Cup the main talking point.

There was also an impressive 4-2 win for AFC Totton, who persevered to see off a stubborn Bristol Manor Farm.

Meanwhile, in the Russell Cotes Cup, Brockenhurst lost to Bemerton Heath Harlequins, and Ringwood Town came out second best in a penalty shootout with Romsey Town.

Bashley visited neighbours Lymington for the second time in eight days – and this time, the outcome was vastly different to the feisty, nerve-shredding, rollercoaster 3-3 draw of the previous week.

Hampered by injuries and suspension, the Lymo side were not as strong as that which took the pitch in the Southern League fixture, and they paid the price.

The ice-breaker came from Adam Grange, with the first of a hat-trick. One of Dan Thompson's typically long throws into the goalmouth was not cleared cleanly, and Grange rattled in the loose ball.

Four minutes later, Harvey Slade sent in a teasing low cross which any one of three Bashley attackers might have turned in, but Harry McGrath steered it home before Grange made it three after 24 minutes after pouncing on a bobbling ball from a corner.

Lymington could not deal with Bashley's corners, and they scored from another when the ball was played to Slade, who cut in and rattled it past Amad Skrzyniarz with the help of a slight deflection.

It was one-way traffic now, and with Lymo dropping deeper and deeper, and successive own goals made it 5-0 after 35 minutes.

A superb run from Jamie Webber earned Grange the chance to earn his hat-trick from the penalty spot, and he made no mistake, sending the keeper the wrong way with ease.

Lymington brought on 16-year-old reserve keeper Chris Raven, and he held out bravely until the 78th minute when Atiako-Hall cut in from the right and made space for a shot which looped in off a defender's toe to complete the scoring.

AFC Totton stormed into the second with two games in hand after stretching their unbeaten run to 10 after defeating Bristol Manor Farm 4-2.

Striker Scott Rendell broke the deadlock early with a right-footed shot which found the bottom right corner for his 15 goal of the season, before Ethan Taylor smashed home a delightful volley moments later.

The Farm reduced the deficit when Owen Howe unleashed a vicious long-ranged effort that had too much power for Lewis Noice to keep out, before Steve Kingdon levelled the match midway through the second half, cleverly flicking home a Jake Gosling free-kick.

With it all to play for, number 10 Taylor slid the ball under the keeper after brilliant work from Benny Read and Jordan Ragguette before Conor Whiteley produced a piece of magic, sending the ball over the centre-back and unleashing a thumping left-footed volley past the sprawling Ben John.

Last year's Russell Cotes Cup winner, Brockenhurst, exited the competition after a 4-2 loss to Bemerton.

Things appeared to be going smoothly for the Badgers when Mitchell Speechley-Price scored with the first attack of real note after just 13 minutes played.

However, two goals in two minutes put the New Forest side on the back foot, with Kane O'Keefe and Greg Peel inflicting the damage in the 27th and 29th minutes.

Danny Young and Peel made it 4-1 before Brockenhurst U18s captain Toby Colmer grabbed a consolation goal with 89 minutes played.

It was also a difficult night for Ringwood Town, who lost a penalty shootout against Romsey Town.

Ringwood top-scorer Harry Smith continued his excellent form with a double, but goals from Bradley Strickland and Toby Gibson levelled matters.

Unfortunately for the New Forest side, Romsey made it back-to-back Russell Cotes Cup shootout wins to progress to the next round.
