Youngsters shine at LTA junior tournament held at Milford Tennis and Squash Club
MILFORD Tennis and Squash Club overcame the typically wet British summer weather to host an excellent event for youngsters at the 84th Grade 4 LTA Open Junior Tournament.
After a rain-induced delay of an hour and a half, the eight-and-under competition kicked off the action with six boys and five girls playing a round-robin format. There was a fantastic effort by Milford member Bertie, who finished as runner-up in his first tournament.
Later came the nine-and-under event with a mixed draw of six players battling a round-robin to determine the winner.
Once all matches were completed, another Milford member, William, topped the standings with four wins from his five matches.
The next day, the sun was shining, and again, an excellent field of players attended, some local and others travelling from London, Cheshire and the Isle of Wight.
The third and final day saw 40 children battling it out on court, and Milford member Joey did superbly, narrowly beaten by the second seed in the 14U singles final.
A Milford Tennis and Squash Club spokesperson said: “The children have been fantastic ambassadors for tennis and shown great mental strength, commitment, talent and sportsmanship.
“A credit to themselves, their families and coaches and what is most pleasing is that 10 players on display were from our club.
“Coach Dan and Caitlin have been focusing on getting juniors into competition, and all our players had a wonderful experience and would do it again.
“Thanks to the volunteers, who without their help this tournament couldn’t go ahead; from the preparation of the courts to the steady stream of officials escorting the juniors on court, supervising and umpiring.
“And, of course, to referee extraordinaire John Cliff, caterers The Trough New Forest for their delicious food, and sponsors support from Hayward Fox, Solent Dental & Moore Barlow.”
