Velocity Wessex Premier football: Hythe & Dibden FC vs Moneyfields, Brockenhurst FC vs Baffins Milton Rovers

IT could have been a better start to the season for the two local sides in Velocity Wessex Premier action, with Hythe & Dibden losing by four goals and Brockenhurst drawing on Tuesday night.

Hythe were caught on their heels against Moneyfields, who finished fifth last year, conceding all four goals before the break.

Meanwhile, the Badgers also had a tough assignment, facing the team which finished seventh in Baffins Milton Rovers, and they will feel they did enough to take all three points.

Moneyfields had a bright start to the curtain-raising game, pinning back the Claypits Lane hosts. The pressure began to tell, and rushed challenges resulted in silly free-kicks awarded around the area.

When the opener came, it had more than a whiff of good fortune, with goalscorer Callum Laycock’s back-of-the-head flick beating Halladay in the Hythe goal after 24 minutes.

New signing Laycock proved a thorn in Hythe’s side, and his excellent ball into Ryan Pennery left him with an easy finish two minutes later.

With four minutes left until the break, Moneyfields still had time to grab two more goals.

The first came from Marco de Sousa after an excellent cutback left him to slot into an empty net from the back post, and the second was a James Franklyn header.

Moneys had the chance to add a fifth in the 66th minute when Laycock went down in the box after a poor tackle. However, Joel Halladay went the right way to deny Pennery.

Hythe created almost nothing, and they will hope for better as the season progresses, with Luke Gray’s free-kick the closest they came all evening.

Brockenhurst conceded some early chances that keeper James Mayo dealt with superbly before Elliot Simpson thought he had put the hosts ahead, only for Jack Francis to hack his effort clear.

Brockenhurst stalwart manager Patrick McManus will be delighted to see his back-five so well organised, with the experienced Craig Stanley doing enough to earn the man-of-the-match accolade.

With moments left, Leon Carbayo-Borges looked to break clear on the counter-attack, only to be cynically fouled by Harvey Wellham, earning a yellow card and perhaps a point for his side.

Both sides return to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 3pm when they look to progress from the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, with Hythe facing Hamble Club away from home and Brockenhurst hosting Fleet Town.
