Calshot fishcake firm Fabulous Catch Company launches online home deliveries

A GOURMET fishcake producer which prides itself on “supporting our declining fishing industry” has launched an online shop.

The Fabulous Catch Company, based at Calshot, has been a popular pop-up at food festivals and farmers’ markets across the south, but the new store will allow customers to order online for home delivery.

The company combines 100% sustainably-caught fish with non-traditional flavours to create award-winning and trend-setting posh fishcakes that have secured Great Taste Awards and a number of other accolades.

Business owner and managing director Hayley Elston said: “We are passionate about supporting our declining fishing industry and doing our bit to protect diminishing fish stocks.

“Our mission is to provide our customers with excellent food whilst supporting local fish markets, and now local game.

“We buy from local growers and other artisan food producers to make a fabulous range of ready-to-eat products that combine traditional flavours and modern tastes.”

Hayley started out in 2012 when she began making her now legendary fish finger sandwich for Camp Bestival on the Isle of Wight. The Fabulous Fishy Fingers were made entirely from the catch of the Yarmouth Fishermen’s Association – now the Needles Fishermen’s Co-op.

Such was the success of the fish fingers that Catch began hand-making other unique fish delicacies for the retail and restaurant trade, including gourmet fishcakes, crab cakes and crab bisque.

Hayley worked with the fishermen’s co-op to add value to their fishing quotas and utilise the under-rated brown crabmeat that was being wasted.

A number of Catch’s products have been guided by the expertise of three-times Michelin-starred chef and Milford resident, Herbert Berger, an investor in the company.

Herbert’s mantra is to “do things properly without cutting corners”, and he provides enviable tuition to the Catch team on techniques and natural flavour combinations, uniting ingredients to create unique gourmet products that are true taste sensations.

The range now includes gluten-free and dairy-free fishcakes, along with the recently developed vegan ‘seacakes’ made with delicious seaweeds, samphire and green vegetables.

In 2022 Catch launched a Wild Game range of venison and game bird products, only available in season, which proved to be extremely popular.

New products continue to be trialled every week.

Catch won its first Great Taste Award in 2013 for its Crabbie Crabcakes and Proper Posh Crab Bisque, and has continued to scoop awards year after year, including being honoured with a coveted two-star award for the Crabbie Crabcakes, Bollywood Fishcakes and the Mac ‘n’ Hari Fishcakes in 2019.
