The Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust holds cookery class at Twynham Primary School

PRIMARY school children got a lesson in healthy eating during a visit from The Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust.

Pupils in Years 4 and 5 at Twynham were shown by Flavours School of Cookery, which is contracted by the trust, how to prepare some delicious, healthy food.

Chefs made gluten-free pancakes, along with a Mediterranean chickpea stew and Japanese noodle dish Yakisoba, which the children then tucked into.

Each pupil was also given a CFFET booklet full of healthy eating information, activities and recipes to try at home.

This cookery class was the first of 11 events to be held in primary schools by the trust over the next three months, helping hundreds of children to make healthier choices about the food they eat and share that knowledge with their families.

CFFET trustee and education co-ordinator Mary Reader said: “We have been working in schools since the first Christchurch Food and Wine Festival in 2000, apart from the pandemic, to provide healthy eating information to Christchurch children.

“We hope that in doing so, they learn how to prepare some healthy meals and taste things they might not otherwise have tried.

“Importantly, they then take this information home.”

The trust’s school work was formalised with the creation of The Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust in 2007. A registered charity, it provides food education across the borough.

Its work in schools costs around £7,000 annually, and the trust relies on donations and fundraising.
