Sopley pub The Woolpack reopens after major revamp

A SOPLEY pub on the banks of the River Avon has reopened following a major refurbishment overseen by its new owners.

The Woolpack, a 17th century thatched property, has been restored to its former glory by Debbie and Duane Lewis, who bought the pub on a 20-year lease from the Stonegate Group in December.

The £120,000 revamp has brought new flooring, additional old wooden beams, a rebuilt bar, comfortable bench seating and new blinds.

“As soon as we saw this beautiful old property, we could see its potential,” said Debbie. “We have repainted and installed stunning lighting to enhance the already characterful bar and restaurant areas.

“All the tables and chairs have been replaced with comfy new benches, pews and low-slung upholstered button chairs, and we have added some lovely new benches on the front terrace and in the garden. Our gardeners have also planted some stunning pots and hanging baskets all around.

“We’ve also invested in new equipment, including fridges, an oven, a coffee machine in the bar and extraction in the kitchen.”

Debbie said the makeover was undertaken by local tradespeople to “ensure business is kept in the area”.

The new owners have worked closely with the head chef, Jamie Haynes, to create a new spring/summer menu with great pub classics including steak and Ringwood Ale pie, ploughman’s lunch and beer battered haddock and chips.

Guests can also choose from a substantial specials board which changes daily in line with seasonal offerings, and there are healthy options on the children’s menu.

Vegetarian and vegans will be well catered for, and there is a good choice of gluten-free dishes.

“Ingredients have been sourced from local suppliers where possible, with some great traders on the doorstep,” said Debbie. “The pub’s Sunday roast has already built up a great reputation, and booking is essential.”

Bar offerings include a selection of real ales: Exmoor Gold, Ringwood 49er and Woolpack Ale (supplied by Piddle Brewery). Lagers include Amstel, Birra Moretti, Fosters and the popular Neck Oil.

Cider drinkers can choose from Inchs, Aspall and Old Mout Berries and Cherries.
