Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance looks back on 'immensely challenging' year

THE Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance responded to more than 1,500 call-outs during an “immensely challenging” 2021.

December was the busiest month of the year in which more than 30% of incidents involved cardiac arrest and 17% were classed as medical emergencies including strokes.

Road traffic collisions made up 15%, and 14% were falls from height. Other cases included rail and sporting incidents, drownings, assaults and stabbings.

Missions by the air ambulance and the charity’s three emergency response vehicles averaged four a day.

Chief executive Richard Corbett said 2021 had been an “immensely challenging” year for the service.

“But for our patients and their families, it was potentially life changing,” he added.

“We are so grateful to all of our supporters for allowing us to be there for the 1,570 people who needed our help last year.

“Their kindness and generosity means the most critically ill and injured patients in our region have the very best chance of survival.

“But we can only continue this work with each and every one of them by our side.”

This year marks 15 years since the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance took off on its first flight in July 2007.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “The specialist skills of the doctors and paramedics on board mean they can administer advanced medication, ventilate patients and even perform open heart surgery – all at the roadside.”

The service is encouraging people to show their support and ensure it can continue flying for “the next 15 years and more”.
