Met Office issues weather warning for gusts of up 55mph across the New Forest and Christchurch
A yellow weather warning has been issued for strong winds across the New Forest and Christchurch throughout today (Monday).
Gusts of up to 55mph are predicted on the south coast, with inland winds of up to 45mph.
The Met Office has also warned of large waves on the shoreline.
“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves,” it said. “Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.
“Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
Motorists have been warned of possible delays to their journeys, and those travelling by bus and train may also face hold-ups.
“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary,” said the Met Office.
Short-term loss of power and other services is also possible.
Winds are expected to slowly ease throughout the evening and first part of tonight.
