Letter: Ridiculous to build retirement flats with so many still on the market
SIR – The plans to build more retirement flats where the police stations were in both Hythe and Lymington is absolutely ridiculous (A&T, 29th April and 13th May).
I would urge the councils to look on Rightmove to see the huge amount of retirement flats currently for sale in both these areas. Some have been on the market for over a year.
This proves there really is no call for any more.
What needs to be built is council/social housing at affordable rents. It's no good building "affordable" housing at £300,000-plus – people in ordinary jobs just can't afford it!
I'm sure the retirement flats are built as this is where the most profit is – nothing to do with serving the community.
The maintenance charges on these flats are very expensive, which I'm sure is one reason why there are so many for sale.
